about that time that these large
and hearty, 300+ lb. feral hogs escaped from hunting preservesin North Carolina, just south of what is today the National Park. This prolific breed had increased in vast numbers by the late 1950s.
Rooting for wildflowers, nuts and berries, thus competing with bears, deer and other native animals, they have become an ecological menace. The combination of their ability to breed large litters,
the lack of predators, and a habitat they consider ideal has caused their numbers to increase dramatically. We liked the selection of the Wild Boar for our mascot primarily because he is a vicious,
unpredictable, basically good-for-nothing menace.
