The Wild Boar was adopted as the mascot for SMU in 1913. It was

about that time that these large and hearty, 300+ lb. feral hogs escaped from hunting preservesin North Carolina, just south of what is today the National Park. This prolific breed had increased in vast numbers by the late 1950s. Rooting for wildflowers, nuts and berries, thus competing with bears, deer and other native animals, they have become an ecological menace. The combination of their ability to breed large litters, the lack of predators, and a habitat they consider ideal has caused their numbers to increase dramatically. We liked the selection of the Wild Boar for our mascot primarily because he is a vicious, unpredictable, basically good-for-nothing menace. A lot like most of our student body.  In fact, they are most of our student body. The ultimate mission at Smoky Mountain University is to have fun. But on the serious side, Smoky Mountain University is also dedicated to creating funding for the preservation of the Smoky Mountains. Each year we will determine which current Smoky Mountain programs will put to the best use the funds we generate for this purpose. Our vehicle for creating these funds is the sale of Smoky Mountain University merchandise. We are dedicated to providing top quality merchandise, designs and craftsmanship in our products. We will at all times maintain an honorable policy toward customer satisfaction, fairness in pricing, and integrity of purpose. Any and all vendors, manufacturers, craftspeople and sponsors of Smoky Mountain University will maintain these high standards of business practice.

Great fun, great stuff and a great cause!
